Irv Gotti Obituary; Hip-Hop Legend Irv Gotti, Founder of Murder Inc., Passes Away at 54: Music Industry in Mourning

The music world is mourning the loss of Irv Gotti, the illustrious music producer and creator of the prominent record label Murder Inc., as reported by The New York Times. The news of his untimely demise at the age of 54 was confirmed by a statement from his former associate, Def Jam Recordings, although the cause of death remains undisclosed.

Originally named Irving Domingo Lorenzo Jr., Gotti was born in 1971 in Hollis, Queens. His notable alias was bestowed upon him by rapper Jay-Z, inspired by the notorious mafia leader John Gotti, after Irv contributed to the production of Jay-Z’s Reasonable Doubout. With his new nickname, Gotti advanced his career at Def Jam in the role of A&R, where he was instrumental in signing DMX and served as executive producer for DMX’s groundbreaking album, It’s Dark and Hell is Hot. Gotti also produced tracks for other artists including Ol’ Dirty Bastard and Foxy Brown. His success was recognized by Def Jam’s then CEO, Lyor Cohen, who awarded Gotti and his brother Chris their own record label.

Murder Inc.’s Rise and Challenges
Under Gotti’s leadership, Murder Inc. quickly signed its first and leading artist, Ja Rule, introducing a signature blend of R&B and rap that became immensely popular at the close of the 20th century. In the late 1990s, Gotti brought on Ashanti as a songwriter and guest vocalist, later elevating her to a lead artist, notably on the 2001 hit single “Always on Time.” Her debut album, released in 2002, was a commercial success and won Gotti a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary R&B Album for his co-production efforts. However, the label faced significant hurdles in 2003 when a federal indictment was issued against it. Although Gotti and his brother were eventually acquitted of all charges, the label struggled to regain its former glory even after rebranding as The Inc.

Gotti’s business practices were occasionally scrutinized. Ashanti had to re-record her debut album to gain control over her masters, which Gotti had held for approximately two decades. She has also described their alleged romantic relationship as manipulative. Additionally, in July of the previous year, Gotti faced accusations of sexual assault and rape by an unnamed woman, allegations which he denied.

Industry Reactions to Gotti’s Death
The announcement of Gotti’s passing elicited diverse reactions from both collaborators and adversaries throughout his career. 50 Cent, a former rival, controversially posted a photo on Instagram next to a tombstone with the caption, “I’m smoking on dat Gotti pack, nah God bless him LOL.” Meanwhile, Kanye West, who occasionally worked with Gotti, briefly shared a dove emoji on Instagram, which was subsequently removed. Def Jam reflected on Gotti’s impact in its statement, noting that he and Murder Inc. “reshaped the soundscape of hip-hop and R&B.” Ja Rule expressed his grief succinctly, posting, “Love you… .”

Lyor Cohen also shared his sentiments, stating, “Def Jam has lost one of its most creative soldiers who was hip-hop. He comes from a very tight beautiful family from Queens and it’s an honour and a privilege to have known him. Irv, you will be missed.”
